@Johnr777 :-D This is really cool ... yeah ... It took a while to load in that data ! Theres a lot of it. And it really looks better than what Ive used. I wonder if @barf could figure something out ... get this mesh data workable ... ?
Looks like theres a method using blender and RenderDoc... https://github.com/eliemichel/MapsModelsImporter
damn ! I remember motorcross madness 2 and how we would make maps for that, makes me wana motocross it. must be a way to grab this data !!! very cool
What just happened in the last 5-6 posts it's what I love about Internet and open discussions. You people are awesome !
The elevation of the track from Barbeque Bend up to the exit of Esses 2 has not changed since 1961. Neither has the shape of the layout from Barbeque up to the halfway point between Esses 2 and Leeukop.
I tried to capture 3D mesh data from google earth last week without any luck. Capture through Direct X with 3D Ripper DX didn't work for me because after I could manage to install an old version of 3DS Max (v7) and Google Earth (v6.2) I realized that the old GE couldn't get map data anymore. (maybe server shutdown or obsolete data format) Capture with photogrammetry works for me but I have to dig deeper to get better results and it is very time consuming. (btw: I used meshroom) The Blender plugin looks promising. Anybody tried this out?
This looks very promising guys ... could be a game changer if we can get a pipeline figured out .... @barf >> join in here man, this is right down your alley
@Gunnar333 yeah 3dripper is obsolete, Ninja Ripper is the more current software with newer import plugins!
Okedokey, finally had to buckle and download Blender. ;-) Trying out the 2.80 beta, and installed the MapsModelsImporter. Happy days!
Tried Ninja Ripper but without success. But!!!! I could manage to import Google Meshes with MapsModelsImporter I took me a lot of attempts.. but finaly I made it. Use the step by step tutorial by Élie Michel: and for me RenderDoc v1.3 didn't work so I downgraded to v1.2 and it worked with Google Maps 3D (not Google Earth)
This is really very cool. Im super excited to get into this. I guess what we need to figure out is the key issue that @Johnr777 mentioned the other day: Getting that Google Earth data is what we want!
I don't see a difference in detail whether I use Google earth in chrome or 3d mode of Google maps. I'm not talking about the elevation data which you get when using sketchup e.g.
Try it yourselve. It's not that difficult. I suspect you can't capture such a large track in one try. So you have to stich it somehow. I'm guessing it depends on the amount of graphic board memory. Especially the captured texture quality. BTW: We should open another thread for this
Great job on this @Gunnar333 , and @Johnr777 for initiating the idea and getting the initial links in place for discovery. Streamlining this process could well be the new norm for areas that dont have lidar I guess ... :-D Hope so! Looking forward to getting some time to get stuck into this.
