@Johnr777 I am really interested in extracting the lidar data from the site you mentioned https://www.foretouverte.gouv.qc.ca/. Is there any other way to convert the TIF format into point cloud? Global mapper is really expensive just to convert a TIF file to LAS, and the trial version last only 14 days....
    How do you manage this?

I'm still interested in the method John uses as like me he's a 3dsmax user...

Point distance varies, it's typically between 0.2 to 0.5m. Officially they promise a minimum of 2.5 pts/m^2, I see lots more.

@Johnr777 I agree it's useful for sure, but to a certain extent. Already looks 10 times better than the old DEM data I used for the terrain, so yeah it can be a very good base.

EDIT: @Johnr777 I checked out the 10m terrain. It's still 3.1 milllions tris !!!! Thanks!

Hello, I don't post often but work is still very much ongoing. I have the finish line in sight, almost.

Lidar fitting has been a real struggle for my limited computer. I've been able to do spots checks, but not much more. So my focus is back at cleaning things up and open the gates for spectators (build it and they will come!). Full terrain cleanup with Lidar will wait after I upgrade my rig and make a first public release, which is near (have you been nice with your brothers and sisters this year? ;-) )

Here are some objects I made that should inject a healty dose of 60's in the surroundings. All ready for placement. Will add a couple more car model for diversity (may have accidentally caught the car modelling bug along the way). I hope FPS won't suffer too much, cars are below 1000 tris each.

    @Patrice COte

Hi Patrice, just stopping by to say thanks for posting so much info on the thread and showing your progress; your passion for it really comes through. Glad to hear it's still going, will make a nice North American loop along with Sergio's WIP 60s Watkins Glen and the layout looks unrelenting!

Hello, being a huge fan of classic, pre-75 era tracks, I was thrilled by the progress being made on this circuit in this specific era. It was one of my favorites to drive around when it was available in the Grand Prix Legends game. Though seeing the last post being a while ago I couldn't help but ask, is there any updates on the progress of this track? It looked super close to reaching the 'releasing line' and I hope a last-minute tech issue, if any, didn't screw up the entire project!

    Hi, sorry for late reply.

This project is still very much alive, I just got sidetracked with big real life projects/work for the most part of the last 6 months.
The current version is totally playable in all game modes, online and all.
CSP extension for rain, flags and AO implemented.
General terrain fitted with Lidar, but not all track too much change to manage.

I've been considering for a while to make a release in current state to get it out in the "wild".
My target as always been to make a top-tier track, but it just seems the finish line is moving away at the same speed I'm progressing. I'm could also be more critical of my own work than necessary but the general quality of good mods tracks is still increasing.

    What's left to do?
    - Re-exporting trees with denser seed. I'm also considering replacing some tree walls with individual trees.
    - Adding tons of small trees/bush to fill the land properly
    - Adding more cars in parking lots.
    - Real AO for the main pit buildings, complete re-UV needed.
    - Extra layout for online race that spreads out grid (instead of the tight 3 wide, but historically accurate current version).
    - Various eye-candy props to add, no sure I'll do many of those for first release.
    - Custom ambiant sounds (another candidate that's likely to miss first release)
    - Final color balance maybe
    - Lidar retrofit - bridge area to rewok, but not going to make first release (big can of worms)

So nothing impossible to do in a relatively short time frame. Keep the faith!

I'm certain there are plenty of people who would love to get their hands on this over the holidays (me included!). I'm also certain that little things that stand out to you will have very little impact on the majority of us. It seems as if there is a point of diminishing returns with creating tracks - you can go on forever, and a track may never truly be finished, but getting it good enough (and I'm sure this is far better than good enough!) and getting it out there can transform the care and attention you have put into it, outwards into the joy of those who go on to drive it. In any case, good luck with the remaining to-do list, and enjoy the holidays.

Diminishing return, that pretty much sums it up, LOL! Still, it's not that far from great but dragging this for so long isn't helping much either.

I'll just give myself a hard deadline, at let it loose at that point, no matter what. For sure, plenty of people will still enjoy it I'm sure despite a few things to polish.

OK lets do this. I'm not telling the date yet, aiming for release in foreseeable future.

Great news sir, hope you and and your family have been enjoying a holiday too!

I would promise not to quibble over the odd cm of altitude or a missing tree, but I doubt I'd have a second to notice on this sort of layout! Really looking forward to it and thanks for the update, but no rush - it's ready when it's ready, whether it's v0.5, v0.9 or v5.0 :)

Just 7 years to go then!

Lovely preview video from Ted Hough here:

Looks great, days, weeks or months... whatever the number means I'm really looking forward to trying it out, thank you.

    7,6,5,4,3,2,..........

    In less than 24 hours!

I authorized Ted to do his Track Guide prior to release, really nicely done. It will help newcomers surviving their first time around.
