    I Agree. but I notice it is very rare and only ever a facility when there are dual sound channels required. for example. FSX radio comms v game sounds. and or some in built voice systems. and even then its just always default.

    I am using 3 audio cards on my system. I made the hdmi the defaut one, and it is used by whatever program while it's active (aka TV is activated).
    As soon as I disconect the tv, the HDMI is automatically disabled and sound falls on the next card.
    PS: I have an AVR between my PC and the TV, so when I switch off the avr, it's like unplugging the hdmi cable from tv (no pass through function).
