    Hi Everyone,

I wanted to introduce myself by starting this W.I.P thread for Montjuic Park Street Circuit that I am currently building. This thread is mostly for my own inspiration and accountability.

Though track mods of Montjuic Circuit have been made in GPLegends and RFactor (with great detail and hard work I will add!), I still plan to build this track from scratch. Although I've built a version in RTB, I was pretty unsatisfied at actually creating the magic of the Montjuic setting, so I will begin the hard work to learn blender and to complete what I truly believe will be a ripping-fast and fun street circuit track mod for Assetto Corsa. I know that I will need the community's help at many points, so I am grateful in advance for your help!

A very short bit of track context and history: Montjuic Circuit is a beautiful tour of Montjuic Park in Barcelona. start/finish stands just down the hill from the Olympic Stadium where a small jump and braking zone lead one into the lefthand hairpin. The driver then winds their way down through 2 hillside parks, a historic fountain and pops out onto the city streets below. Then tucking through the streets, between the theatre and museums, you'll pass the Magic Fountain and Art Museum of Catalunya before winding back up the hillside through wide and tremendously fast sweeping increasing radius turns, back to the start/finish.

Montjuic Circuit began hosting motorcycle racing in 1950 and hosted it's first F1 race in 1969. The track hosted the Spanish GP every other year until 1975 when a combination of poor track safety and a fatal accident (5 spectators killed near the jump!) ended it's F1 tenure. Ronnie Peterson set the fastest lap record during qualifying with a 1:21.8 in his Lotus 72e during the 1973 race weekend. Race winners at the 4 Spanish GPs held here are Jim Clark, Jackie Ickx, Emerson Fittipaldi and Jochen Mass in that order.

My initial thoughts are to provide two layouts - The 1969 version will be the historic and original layout with no chicanes or roundabout. The second version will be a modern version that includes fewer barriers, but with chicanes and the new roundabout that was added to the park. This was the featured layout at the 2012 Montjuic Revival and can be seen in the Porsche onboard below. If that second version is too slow or boring, I may change the positions of some of the chicanes, or perhaps a hybrid of the original that also includes the outside route around the roundabout... we'll have to see how it's tests out!

Here are some onboards to get you excited!

    Hi @Ben
Welcome and glad to see you were inspired to start your project :).
I also can bet there are at least a "few" friends around that would support your idea of NOT using RTB, but that's another story :D

Your track got my attention because funny enough I was jist thinking that I would like to see more city tracks in AC :).

Good luck and looking forward to see where this goes.

There are some Blender tuts in our dedicated section also.

    Thanks Luchian

I will definitely be all over those blender tuts! To Bezier or Nurbs curve? - that is the question!

    Hey Guys,

Really struggling to find good terrain data to begin with. I've been playing with the LiDAR data I got from Spanish Government and it just seems way to spread out.

Sorry for the ultra-newbie-ness, I know some of you have been building tracks for years now, but would love any guidance on where to start in this regard.

Here's a screen grab of what I have in CloudCompare:

PS: I have been playing with the OSM tool in Blender and can load in the terrain map (can load in OSM street view seperately) but it also seems low res. Is there a way in blender to augment the terrain map, perhaps with subdivision or something, to bring up the resolution of that data? Just worried if I can't make LiDAR work...

Montjuic in Assetto !!! This is gonna be amazing !!!!

Sorry I can't help you, I just have some basic knowledge of RTB ...

9/9 update: I've properly finished the Blender Guru tutorials and got my own practice track working in AC so I feel like I'm in a good place from the Blender perspective... at least until things get real!

I'm still having a hell of a time finding a good height map of Montjuic park. I saw a post elsewhere that it might be possible to grab one at the very least from RTB.

PLEASE let me know if anyone has suggestions - would be lovely to make a breakthrough here so I can begin to properly model the spline on top of a height map.

In the meantime I'll be doing Blender exercises while I continue the search for what I need to start.

Do you mean that the individual points are far apart? The image looks reasonable. Do you have the option of DTM LIDAR?

Maybe I have the wrong end of the stick.

Yes the individual points I believe are at 3 meter increments, so it *Might* be useful just for getting the heights of the road/buildings/trees right, and as a nice 3d reference, but I don't think it will be as nice as some of the other detailed point clouds I've seen. I'm going to keep playing with it.

Not sure about DTM LiDAR - I'll do a little more digging.

    9/11 Update:

Got my LiDAR data into Blender today. It's massively complex and I think I'm going to have to play with the CloudCompare Tutorial a bit more to break it down much further into something I can actually work with. I have a pretty beefy computre but Blender continues to crash with the full scene loaded in. In any case, here are but a few screen shots.

Honestly been challenged to find the time to keep this going, but I think about it a few times a week. I still clean and scrub the point cloud a few times a week but it's sooo slow going.

Hope to find the time over the holidays to get a rhythm back together. Thanks for checking in!

Must be difficult because of all the buildings. Goodwood pointcloud was relatively easy because I could just merge all vertices in off track areas where it was flat. You can also select vertices and use remove doubles function, at least in blender there is an option where you can assign a distance in which vertices will be considered to be merged. So you can reduce two, three, four times.... the amount of vertices in chosen spot. It wouldn't break geometry, just would reduce detail level.

I have used the authentic lidar data for the road. But it is difficult, and almost all other modders use it just as a refference and just projects new mesh over by using spline and shrinkwrap modifier. Definitely musch easier way, you'd sava a lot of time, probably would miss a few details from road mesh, but at the same time probably would avoid most bumps, and people likes bumps free tracks for some reason. Even though it is street circuit, and I suppose that road has ton of details in it.

Unfortunately the lidar data is going to be hard for any road detail. The points are about a meter apart in most places, so all the work I'm doing will end up as a reference for the height and elevation changes, which I think are the most important part. The original tarmac looks "reletively" smooth, but I want to play around with it once it's ready.

I absolutely love your Goodwood mod - TY very much for several great hours with it so far!

Yes 1m is a bit much, but not terribly, I think 0.5m is quite good resolution. One meter is not too low.

Dont forget cambers, cambers are also given by lidar. Though cambers could be considered as elevation changes too. Bumps and smaller undulations theoretically are elevation changes too.

In the end your 1.0m mesh could be enough to have plenty of funky elements in the road.

Glad that you like Goodwood Circuit :)

Also I think that using Lidar mesh as a refference is very good too, perhaps better. Just make sure that the mesh you are shrinkwrapping on is detailed enough, so it could follow LiDAR mesh well enough, and pick the undulations. I think mesh which will be projected should match the resolution of the LiDAR mesh.
